To Be Willing

To Be Willing

After hearing the message
from the angel,
after asking the obvious question,
“How can this be
that I will give birth
to a son?”,
and after hearing
the angel’s reply,
Mary simply
and amazingly answered,
Let it be to me
according to your word.

~Luke 1:38

Let it be to me according to your word.

In these words,
we hear her willingness
and her complete surrender –
the same kind
of willingness
and complete surrender
that would one day
be echoed
from the child
she was willingly accepting
to carry, birth, and raise:

Not my will, but yours be done.

Like Mary,
God has a special purpose
in mind for you and me.

Mary wasn’t called upon
to conceive God’s plan;
she was called to birth it.

What call has God
placed on your life?

What seed has God
already placed in your heart?

What destiny is God
calling you to birth?

Like Mary,
we don’t need
to understand how
or know why;
we simply need
to be obedient
and answer “yes, Lord”
.

Like Mary,
we don’t need
special talents or abilities;
we simply need
the anointing
and favor
of God on our life
.

Like Mary,
we don’t need
to make it happen
in our own strength
and power;
we simply need
to allow God
to make it happen
in us and through us
.

For we are
God’s masterpiece.
He has created us
anew in Christ Jesus,
so we can do
the good things
he planned for us
long ago.

~Ephesians 2:10

Like Mary,
we simply need
to be willing.

Let it be to me according to your word.

Not my will, but yours be done.

May these words,
this kind of surrender,
this level of willingness,
be heard from us, too –
the very ones
who have been given
so very much
because of their willingness
to be willing.
