Called to Pray

Called to Pray

We sit in the waiting room,
my mom, my sister and me.

As we wait to hear
the name of my mother
calling her back
for a routine doctor visit,
my eyes scan the sitting area –
momentarily resting
on each lady in the room.

Untl they land
on her  –
and stay.

Hair, silver and grey,
tousled with
feminine softness
from what I assume
to be natural curls  –
skin, beautiful brown,
taut,
showcasing both
beauty and strength –
stature, petite,
with a perfectly matched slenderness,
adorned by her simple,
yet very attactive to her,
attire.

And in her,
I see another woman
near and dear to my heart –
the resemblance so striking,
I have to glance away
to keep myself
from staring.

I lean in close
to my sister
and in a voice
barely above a whisper,
I direct her attention
to the lady
at the far side
of the waiting area.

“Look.
She reminds me of Lucy.”

My sister casually
shifts her eyes
in the direction of my words,
and nods her head.

And I know
God has me here
in this place
at this moment
for my mom, yes-
and my sister, too –
but also for her
and for Lucy.

I lower my head,
and while anyone
looking at me
might assume
I’m looking at my phone,
the eyes of my heart
are gazing intently
upon my Savior
as I lift
both the lady in the room
and the lady now on my heart
up to Him
on the wings of prayer.

Minutes pass.

Names are called.

Ladies walk by.

But, she remains.

And I can’t help
but wonder
and anxiosly wait
to see
what name
will gain her attention
and beckon her
to stand up
and walk by, too.

The urge to pray
so strong,
I find myself
whispering
in my heart,
“Will her name be Lucy, too?”

“Ramona.”

In a quick movement,
she is up
and soon,
a door closes behind her.

For a split second,
my mind wanders
from her
back to my sister
and my mother
and the reason
we are here.

Utnil the next lady is called.

“Lucy.”

Instantly,
my sister
is now the one
looking at me
from the corner
of her eye.

And,
this time,
I nod and say,
“God is definetely
calling me
to wrap her
in prayer today.”

My mother’s name
is called next.

As my sister
escorts her through
the open door,
I stay in
the waiting room,
which to me
now
has become
the very throne room
of Heaven.

And, I pray.

Without knowing
circumstances or situations,
it is enough to know
God knows
and He has
called me to pray.

And I know
heaven is touching earth
and God is moving.

It’s why I’m here –
to intercede,
to stand in the gap,
to be the one
in the middle.

To pray for another,
what a privilege.

To be prayed for,
what a gift.

That the Father
loves us
with such
an intense love
that He
boldly speaks our name
to a praying heart –
what love is this.
