It Is Written
“It is written . . . “
Tortilla in hand,
I wipe
every inch of my
just finished
plate of enchiladas
in hopes
of sopping up
any leftover red chile.
And,
as I do,
I smile.
And I think
of my husband’s
great Uncle Dan.
And I remember
the words
he spoke to me
more times
than I can count.
“My, oh my, Stacy.
You use
that tortilla
as well
as most people
use a fork or spoon.”
When I first started
dating my husband,
my favorite place
to “go out to eat”
was his mother’s kitchen.
Every day,
no matter the day
or the season,
you could always count
on there being
a fresh pot of beans
and a fresh pot of chile
on the stove.
Most days,
there was also rice –
she made the best rice,
and fresh tortillas, too.
And all of it,
was so very delicious
you couldn’t help
but want to get
every last bit of it.
And this is where
the tortilla came in.
something delectable,
something nutritional,
something to fill your stomach,
it was also
an amazing tool
for scooping up
beans and rice,
or soaking up
the last bit of chile
still clinging to the plate.
And Uncle Dan
was right.
I knew how
to make that
tortilla
work for me.
And in a
roundabout way,
as I held
a tortilla today
and thought of
this charming man’s
not-to-be-forgotten
words to me,
I thought about
the Word –
God’s Word.
The Bread of Life.
Our spiritual food.
More than
the tortilla
ever could,
God’s Word
brings spiritual nourishment
to our soul,
to our inner man.
But,
this word of God,
is also
meant to be
an invaluable part
of our spiritual armor.
The sword, in fact.
The only offensive weapon
of all those listed
in Ephesians 6.
The only piece
of armor
with which
you and I
can fight back,
can step out and move forward,
can advance,
can take some ground.
“It is written . . . “
It’s the weapon
Jesus himself wielded
when He met
Satan in the wilderness
during a forty day
season of fasting.
“It is written . . .”
Sharper than sharp
these words pierced
the deception and deceit
being fed to him
by the enemy of our soul.
As Jesus quoted
the very words
from The Word,
Satan lost every round.
Jesus knew how
to use the Word
better than
most people
know how to
quote a verse here
or refer to it there.
Like a bat
at the end of the arm
of a major league batter,
the Word
was simply an
extension
of who
He was –
The Word made flesh.
And yet,
this same power
is available to
you and I today.
We have been
given The Word of God,
not simply to feed on
but to fight with.
But,
in order to fight
with the Word
and to fight
with it well,
we have to first
feed on it
until it, too,
becomes an extension
of who we are.
Getting the last
bit of chile –
it’s good
and you certainly
want to try.
Getting the last
word with Satan –
it’s imperative
and you absolutely
better learn to do it.
Wielding the
sword of the Spirit
should become
as natural
to us
as taking a bite of food
but carry with it
a supernatural power
that can break down walls
and set the captives free.
As I held my tortilla,
pondering this thought –
in a way
that was anything but
roundabout, –
I heard God
speak to my
spirit.
Immerse yourself
in My Word.
Saturate your mind
with My Word.
Feed your inner man
on My Word.
Meditate day and night
on My Word.
Let My Word
become
so ingrained
in you
that it becomes
an extension
of who you are.
Study it.
Know it.
Memorize it.
Digest it.
Speak it.
Declare it.
Wield it.
And when we do,
when we know
how to use
the Word of God,
the sword of the Spirit
with an exactness and precision
that is
backed with all
the power of
The WORD, Himself-
we will be able
to clean up
every last bit of evil
clinging to our lives –
and Satan,
he will lose every round.
Our fighting words?
These.
Always these.
“It is written . . .”
